Focus Lower Body
Environment Hydrotherapy pool
Pool Depth Fully Anchored
Supervision Not required
Equipment Yes

How to Perform

  1. Stand on left leg in chest-deep water away from wall, arms abducted at 45 degrees for balance.
  2. Ankle weight attached to right ankle for added resistance.
  3. Maintain neutral standing position, avoiding external hip rotation.
  4. Abduct right leg out to the side as far as possible with full range while keeping trunk still.
  5. Return leg to starting position in controlled manner against resistance.
  6. Complete 10-15 repetitions at 50 beats per minute cadence (faster than original).

Key Execution Cues

Remember: No wall support. Do not move trunk. Keep leg in neutral, avoid rotating hip outward. Full range of motion. Control the added resistance. High muscle activation maintained.

Safety & Precautions

Important: Avoid if acute hip injury or recent hip replacement. Requires good balance. Not suitable for those with significant mobility limitations.

Additional Safety Notes: Requires good balance without wall support. Stop if sharp pain develops or balance is compromised. Monitor form with added resistance.

Exercise Modifications

Make it Harder (Progressions)

Increase weight resistance. Progress cadence to 55 bpm. Add second set of 15 reps. Perform with eyes closed for proprioceptive challenge.

Make it Easier (Regressions)
