Most of us think that exercise is a good way to lose weight and firm up, but guess what? It’s not! Why you ask? Exercise and physical activity only account for about 10-30% of the calories you burn daily. That’s it! Assuming you’re eating a 2000-2500 calorie diet, that’s about 1.5 donuts worth of calorie burn you’d get from physical activity. Depressing right? You thought you were going to find out about an app that will help you lose weight through exercise. But wait, there’s more to it than that. So what’s exercise good for? Glad you asked! Exercise is excellent for keeping your bones and muscles strong, improving your circulation, staving off heart disease, lung disease and cancer, improving immunity, and improving your mood by producing happy neurotransmitters in your brain!  Exercise can even make you smarter. When we participate in aerobic exercise our brain produces something called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Think of this as brain fertilizer. It actually helps grow new brain cells that help with memory and learning. Remember in school when all of the smartest athletes were track and cross country? Well, there’s some truth to that! Sorry anaerobic sports…the effect is larger with aerobic exercise.  When you go exercise today, don’t do it for weight loss - do it for your brain, heart, lungs, bones and muscles.
